Cities of Migration and Pathways to Prosperity Community Consulation
|
|
|
Various stakeholders and local experts listened to the presentation from Cities of Migration.
|
|
At the beginning of March, the Immigration
Partnership facilitated a combined Brockville community consultation
with Cities of Migration and Pathways to Prosperity, two internationally
renowned organizations researching immigration and community
development best practices. Brockville was chosen for this consultation
for a variety of reasons, the primary ones being the need to find
solutions to address a declining population, and local labor market
challenges.
The various stakeholders, local experts, and service providers answered
questions around what attracts and retains immigrants to the area, what
barriers exist, and what can be done to improve local attraction and
retention efforts. Presentations from both organizations highlighted
their research focuses and their end-goals. The reports and toolkits
created from this research will be shared with the Immigration
Partnership and partners once completed.

We Are Neighbours: Around the World
|
|
|
Two of our youngest event participants had fun dressing up at the Chilean table!
|
|
On March 7th, the 2018 We Are Neighbours
campaign wrapped up with the Around the World event. Seven participants
from We Are Neighbours representing Chile, France, Iran, Ireland,
Pakistan, Scotland, and Syria hosted tables representing their home
countries and cultures.
Visitors to the event spent time at each table, listening to the host,
asking questions, and getting to see the different items each host had
brought in to decorate their table. After fifteen minutes, people
switched to the next table, giving everyone the opportunity to visit
each "country" and learn about it.
A number of people came by, and a lot of great conversations, laughter,
and information was shared. It was a wonderful event and an excellent
wrap-up to the 2018 campaign. We Are Neighbours is an annual campaign
designed to showcase the diversity of the people, experiences, and ways
of life here in Leeds and Grenville. Participants share stories fitting
the theme for each year, coming together in the end for a wrap-up event
like Around the World.

We Are Neighbours 2019 Campaign

|
|
Poster for the 2019 We Are Neighbours campaign
|
|
We Are Neighbours is back again for 2019!
This year's campaign focuses on food and culture, and the stories
connected to them. We're looking for recipes and the stories behind
those recipes from anyone living, working, or studying in Leeds and
Grenville. Whether it's a family recipe, one you learned from a
neighbour, or just your favourite, we're open to anything! Does the
recipe have history in your family? Did something funny happened when
you were making it? Did it create a connection between you to someone
else? Whatever the story, we want to hear it!
If you're interested in participating, get in contact with us!
Contact us at lauren@eecentre.com, 613-498-2111, 105 Strowger Blvd., or on social media @LGImmigration.
The previous years' stories can be found here.

Siobhan, the daughter of Irish immigrants,
started this monthly potluck as a way to bring members of the different
communities together. She has said that with no relatives in Canada,
friends became their closest support network. Thank you Siobhan for
taking on such an inclusive and welcoming initiative!
