To register your vehicle, you must go to the Driver and Vehicle License Issuing Office. Click here to find the Office closest to you.

The Ministry of Transportation offers more information on how to license a vehicle in Ontario.

License plates are renewed annually, on the vehicle owner’s birthday. To renew a license plate, you must get a new validation sticker every year, and attach it to the upper right-hand corner of your license plate. Owners of vehicles are mailed a renewal application approximately 60 days before your current sticker expires.

If you have a car from another country or province, you have 30 days to register it in Ontario.

This program ensures vehicles in Ontario are regularly tested for emission problems. The emissions test is sometimes required to renew a vehicle license plate. It is the responsibility of vehicle owners to repair any problems that are identified by the test.

You can learn more about the Drive Clean program, and if your vehicle needs to pass an emissions test, by going to the Ontario Ministry of Environment website.
